Modern Music

It seems everyone these days is attracted towards simplicity. This sentiment is certainly present in our modern music industry: All songs seem to be in 4/4 and the lyrics sound like they've been written by a 3rd grader with Downs syndrome. (And no, T-Pain, "mansion" does not rhyme with "Wisconsin")
I'll admit that I'm generalizing, and some pop songs show signs of actual musicianship. However, it is safe to say that most songs on KIIS FM are like the ones described above. I don't like the path our modern music is heading. Where are we going to draw the line with things such as auto-tune? Nowadays, it's possible to be a platinum artist without any real musical ability or prowess.

  1. I remember reading something about how this generation was to be known as the multitasking generation. This is reflected in the music. It's meant to be listened to passively and not engaged with, a mere soundtrack to whatever task is at hand no matter how menial. Which is truly saddening when one considers that actively engaging in music reveals new parameters and touches one in a way that few other media outlets can. When it's good that is.

  2. Completely, utterly and totally agree. It's a sad state of affairs, especially with the teen pop stars and their cult followings. But there is good music out there, it's just harder to find it.

  3. The term good music is subjective of course, but I agree with what your saying. There is little to no push for creativity within the popular music scene these days. Go indie, or stop listening is the only suggestion I could give you. But keep hope alive for a better future, the best musical revolutions are the unexpected ones.

  6. Thus is the mainstream music industry. It's what sells, not what's good

  8. I don't think most people are really music fans. They just like music as background noise. So long as it has a catchy hook or danceable beat, they like it. I haven't listened to the radio in years.

  12. I think auto tune should only be used as a way to create music, not as a means of fixing your voice if you cant sing.

  14. Music is becoming crappier and crappier as the years go by....."musicians" just want to cash out rather than make something good

  17. Being a platinum artist was never about artistic ability or integrity, platinum awards has been and will always be an award that deals in sales, not in the quality of the music.

I can make the shittiest music and be a great marketer, have a genius advertiser and find a way to have other artists say my name, and the music will sell and I will be awarded, and that's what it is.

It's not the musician that should feel proud due to his platinum selling album, it should be his manager and his label.

  19. I look at the music of this generation and it almost disgusts me. Looking back on previous generations, from the late30's to the mid 90's had some great music, and it seems our generation is shitting all over it.

@xazbaschboss , I agree completely with that statement. The music we hear has no real story or meaning to it, its just mindless babble from middle school dropouts.

  26. I like stuff thats not in 4/4. I agree there's not enough. Take Five is a good jazz tune in 5/4.

  27. It's not really about the music anymore or the lyrics people just like something with a good rhythem to get them going.

  28. Wow that's funny, I hadn't thought of the dumbing down of EVERYTHING these days as related to simplicity... but I suppose it is. Strange. I might have to rethink my whole philosophy, LOL.
